A Pit Furnace is a vertical, cylindrical furnace built into the ground or partially recessed. It's designed for heat treating long, tall, or heavy parts - especially shafts, rods, tubes, and bars - that are loaded vertically. It's most commonly used for annealing, normalizing, carburizing, hardening, and tempering of steel components.
Key Characteristics
  • Vertical loading (parts are suspended into the furnace)
  • Often deep and narrow - ideal for long parts
  • Gas-fired or electric heating
  • Can operate in air, inert gas, or carburizing atmospheres
  • Heavy-duty insulation to retain heat

Applications
  • Shafts, spindles, rods
  • Gears, bearings, and springs
  • Oil & gas tool components
  • Aircraft landing gear
  • Carburizing or nitriding of steel
  • Stress relieving of weldments or forgings
Advantages
  • Great for long vertical parts
  • Good temperature uniformity
  • Can be sealed for protective or carburizing atmospheres
  • Heavy-duty design = long service life
  • Available in manual or automated configurations
